PORTOMASO, MALTA

BLOCK 31

2012

Block 31 was conceived to offer a new and unique dwelling type to the high profile Portomaso Marina Portfolio. An in-depth structural study pushed regular construction boundaries in Malta as the design had to be planned around the existing Portomaso car park structure beneath. Furthermore, the site was too deep for a single apartment back-to-front as regards to feasibility and adequate spatial design.

The building was terraced to reduce the impact of its volume, whilst apartments benefitted from large terraces enjoying extensive views across Balluta Bay and the Portomaso Marina. Spatially, the approach was a vertical take on the contemporary open plan, abandoning conventional floor heights and designing with double-loaded corridors and duplex loft style units. The double volume over the living area, floods the space with natural light creating complexity, character and dimension to the open plan that is visually appealing. A steel staircase leads up to the bedroom quarters that remain private and intimate in spatial configuration. An exciting volume emerged to counteract the ever-increasing mono-space culture.
